Guten Tag, Berlin

January's second big city trip went to Berlin together with Annette. She's a "local", as she spent one year living there before she started studying Musicology, so it was such a pleasure to travel with her, as she knew all the Berliner things to do there. We had four full days of exploring, walking and enjoying the city, and we got to do a lot of different things, both touristic and local.

DDR Museum
The first day, I spent some time alone in the DDR Museum, located right next to the Berliner Dom. The museum presents the history and everyday life of the inhabitants of the Deutsche Democratische Republik (1949-1990). A very interactive and interesting museum.
The Trabi-car was the only car available for the normal citizen of DDR, and it could have up to a 10 year waiting list.

A traditional DDR kitchen.

Reichstag
A tour in the Reichstag consists mainly of going up and down the Dome (Kuppel). On a clear day there will probably be a good view from there, but we were so lucky to get fog and rain and couldn't see very far. But we learned a lot about the history of the building. To get in there we had to book a time in advance, and bring our Passports.

The Hat Jazz Club
As we are music students, we were obliged to go and listen to some music. We got to listen to both a classical concert, and also went to a Jazz Club, The Hat, which had a jam that night. We both got to go up and sing, which was an incredible experience in itself.

Lunch Concert in the Berliner Philharmonie
The Foyer of the Berliner Philharmonie was packed with people for the lunch concert.

Neues Museum, Museum Insel
We wanted to go to one of the many museums at the Museum Insel, and as I have been to Athens in January and allready seen my fair share of Greek sculptures, we chose Neues Museum, which had a selection of old Egyptian treasures. Beautiful!

Kino International
Visiting Berlin sometimes feels like visiting the past. Not that it is not technologically up to date or not in any way fashionable, but the Retro feeling is so strong in the city. We went to the Kino International, which is a part of Yorck Kinogruppe, which consists of 13 old movie theaters that still run in the old fashioned way, but show the newest movies. We saw La La Land, which sat the standard for the rest of our trip. We walked the streets singing "City of Stars" the whole next two days until we were back home in Copenhagen.

U-Bahn

Prenzlauer Berg and Kreuzberg
Two parts of Berlin that are worth a visit. Quite centrally located, but still more easy going than the busy Mitte. Cosy cafés, and nice second hand or vintage stores. Some of the buildings in Prenzlauer Berg even had a Parisian look.

Flamingo Fresh Food Bar - Located close to the Reichstag building. Perfect for lunch, and very student-friendly prices. Unfortunately, I have no pictures.

Dolores Taco - right next to KaDeWe. The best tacos, the best prices. We ended up eating there twice!
Julini - a cosy place with really good hot chocolate.

Auf wiedersehen, Berlin! I'll be back
